Tropical palm seed collection
A focused seed collection for growers planning a warm, humid project around the accepted tropical palm species Areca catechu.
Areca catechu is the betel-nut or areca-nut palm. Kew accepts the species in the palm family and describes it as a tree of the wet tropical biome, so it is best treated as a tropical growing project rather than a cold-hardy outdoor palm.
11 active seed listings with current packet options and USD prices.
The current collection is species-specific. The main decision is whether your growing space can support a wet-tropical palm from germination through establishment.
Choose Areca catechu when you can provide sustained warmth and protection from cold. Kew records the species as a wet-tropical tree, not a temperate palm.
Plan for a tree palm rather than a short-lived houseplant crop. Container culture may be useful during establishment, but the long-term size and climate requirements still matter.
Palm germination is often slow and uneven, and results vary by species, seed lot, and storage history. Use the live product instructions for this lot instead of borrowing a timetable from another palm called areca.
University of Florida guidance covers palms broadly, not this seed lot specifically. Use it to understand the process, then follow current product-specific instructions where they differ.
General palm guidance recommends removing fleshy fruit tissue before storage or sowing in most species and planting seed soon after cleaning. The exact preparation depends on how the supplied seed has already been processed.
Most palm seed germinates more rapidly and uniformly under warm conditions. Avoid copying a temperature or timetable from Dypsis lutescens, which is also called areca palm but is not Areca catechu.
Maintain uniform moisture during the first emergence stages while keeping standing water off the substrate surface. Alternating saturation and severe drying can reduce success.
Use the live product card for current seed quantity, price, availability, and lot-specific preparation notes before ordering.
The current live collection is centered on Areca catechu, commonly called the betel-nut or areca-nut palm. Kew recognizes Areca catechu as an accepted species in the palm family.
It should not be presented as one. Kew describes Areca catechu as a tree of the wet tropical biome, so growers should plan for sustained warmth and cold protection.
This page does not promise a fixed timetable. University of Florida guidance notes that palm germination varies greatly among species, seed lots, parent plants, and harvest years; use the product instructions and continue only while the seed remains sound.
Do not assume that one treatment fits every palm. General palm guidance reports mixed responses to water soaking and reserves scarification for seeds whose covering actually prevents water uptake, so follow the preparation notes for the supplied Areca catechu lot.
