About this variety
About the Canary Island date palm
Phoenix canariensis is the Canary Island date palm, a member of the Arecaceae family and an accepted palm species native to the Canary Islands. Mature specimens develop a substantial trunk and a dense, symmetrical crown of feather-like leaves.
Also known as: Canary Island date palm, Canary date palm, Pineapple palm, Palmera canaria, Palmier des Canaries, Kanarische Dattelpalme, Palma delle Canarie, Palmeira-das-canárias, Finik kanarskiy and Phoenix jubae.
Sowing guide
- Soak cleaned seed in room-temperature water, changing the water regularly.
- Sow in a clean, free-draining medium in a pot deep enough for the first root.
- Cover lightly, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.
- Keep consistently warm and moist, with good air circulation.
Palm seed often germinates over an extended period. Stable warmth is more useful than frequent disturbance. Keep the pot labelled and check that the mix remains fresh rather than sour or waterlogged.
Growing on
Give emerging seedlings bright light, increasing direct sun gradually. Use tall pots when repotting so the developing roots are not forced into a tight coil. Feed only after active growth is established and at a modest rate.
This palm becomes large, and mature leaf bases and spines demand sensible placement. Check local climate and space before planting outdoors. In colder regions, maintain young palms in containers and protect them from hard frost.
Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, temperature, moisture and local growing conditions. Keep a small record of sowing date and treatment so you can adjust the next batch.
