About this variety
Grow peacock flower, Caesalpinia pulcherrima, from seed. Also known as red bird of paradise or dwarf poinciana, this tropical shrub is admired for airy foliage and vivid clusters of red, orange, and yellow flowers with long stamens. In warm climates it can form a colorful specimen, informal hedge, or pollinator-friendly garden accent.
The seeds have a hard coat and usually benefit from scarification. Lightly nick or abrade the coat without damaging the interior, then soak the seeds in warm water. Sow them in a clean, freely draining mix, cover lightly, and maintain steady warmth and gentle moisture. Strong light supports compact growth after emergence. Reduce watering as established plants mature, and protect seedlings from frost and prolonged cold.
Seed color, size, and germination timing can vary naturally, while results depend on pretreatment and growing conditions.
Caesalpinia pulcherrima performs best with sun, warmth, and drainage. Regular pruning can maintain a smaller, bushier shape, but the plant may carry thorns, so select its position thoughtfully. Check regional planting guidance before outdoor use.
