Duranta erecta – Golden Dewdrop, Skyflower, Pigeon Berry (Duranta erecta)
General Description
Duranta erecta, commonly known as Golden Dewdrop, Skyflower, or Pigeon Berry, is a fast-growing evergreen shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Widely cultivated for its stunning cascading flowers and golden berries, this plant is a popular choice for ornamental gardens, hedges, and wildlife attraction. Its striking purple or blue blooms and ability to adapt to various conditions make it a favorite in landscaping.
This multi-stemmed shrub grows 2 to 6 meters in height, forming a dense, bushy structure. The foliage consists of small, bright green leaves, creating a lush backdrop for its abundant flowers. The delicate, violet, blue, or lavender flowers appear in clusters, often accompanied by small, golden-yellow berries that persist into winter. It thrives in warm climates and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, enhancing garden biodiversity.
Taste and Benefits
While the berries are visually appealing, they are toxic to humans and animals if consumed. Despite this, the plant is highly beneficial as an ornamental shrub, natural hedge, or pollinator-friendly species.
Cultivation Recommendations
Seeds should be soaked in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to improve germination. Prefers well-drained soil and full sun but tolerates partial shade. It is drought-resistant once established, requiring moderate watering. Pruning encourages compact growth and continuous flowering.
