Germination temperature
Cool, ideally with warmer days and cooler nights: over 80% germinated at 15/6, 20/10 and 25/15 °C (59/43, 68/50, 77/59 °F).

Chinese buttercup is a hairy, yellow-flowered perennial of damp fields and grassy slopes from the Himalaya to East Asia. Fresh seed germinates well in cool weather with a day-night temperature swing, but stalls in steady heat.
Cool, ideally with warmer days and cooler nights: over 80% germinated at 15/6, 20/10 and 25/15 °C (59/43, 68/50, 77/59 °F).
On the surface or barely covered.
Within a few weeks in cool conditions; laboratory tests ran for 30 days.
Sun to light shade in moist ground.
Not needed for fresh seed; cold stratification did not help.
Either; pots make it easier to control moisture.
Use fresh seed. In a 2024 study of seed collected in Korea, 88% of the seed was viable and fresh seed germinated at over 80% when given alternating temperatures. Wear gloves when handling the plant (see the safety note below); the seed itself needs no special handling.
Not needed. The seed coat does not block germination.
Not needed. In the same study, 4, 8 or 12 weeks at 4 °C (39 °F) did not improve germination. A short cool spell is different: one week at 10 °C (50 °F) in moist conditions raised germination at 20 °C (68 °F) to 80%. If your days are warm, a week in a cool place before sowing can help.
Not needed. Gibberellic acid (GA3) had no significant effect, so soaking in growth hormone is not worthwhile.
Germination was high at alternating 15/6, 20/10 and 25/15 °C, and similar at a constant 15 °C (59 °F). Untreated seed did not germinate at a constant 25 or 30 °C (77 or 86 °F). In India, sow in the cool months after the monsoon on the plains, and in spring or early autumn in the hills.
Scatter on the surface and press in, or cover with only a dusting of fine soil. No depth trials exist for this species, and shallow sowing keeps the seed close to the daily temperature swing it needs.
A moisture-retentive seed mix, such as compost with some loam. This plant grows wild in grassy places and as a weed of irrigated fields, so it does not want a dry, sandy mix.
Keep the surface constantly moist but not flooded.
Place pots in bright light outdoors, where natural day and night temperatures differ.
Expect most seedlings within a few weeks; the study's germination tests ran for 30 days.
Move seedlings into individual pots or a damp bed once they have two or three true leaves. Wear gloves.
Keep the soil moist. Plants grow into a leafy clump and flower with small, glossy yellow buttercups. In the wild in India it grows at about 1,000-2,500 m, from the north-western Himalaya to north-east India.
Cause: constant heat. Untreated seed did not germinate at a steady 25-30 °C (77-86 °F). Fix: sow in the cool season, or outdoors where nights are clearly cooler than days.
Cause: a dry mix. This is a plant of damp ground. Fix: use a moisture-holding mix and stand pots in a shallow saucer of water during dry spells.
Cause: buttercup sap. Plants in this family contain compounds that release protoanemonin, which can redden, swell and blister skin. Fix: wear gloves, avoid long bare-handed handling and wash skin after contact.
Cause: Ranunculus species readily spread as weeds in sunny, wet ground. Fix: remove spent flowers before the seed heads ripen.
All buttercups should be treated as poisonous. Swallowing large amounts can cause stomach irritation, and related buttercups are listed as toxic to dogs, cats, horses and livestock. Do not grow it where children or animals might chew it, and never eat any part of the plant.
Grow it at the edge of a pond, in a bog garden or in a pot kept in a water tray.
Fresh seed, cool weather and a daily temperature swing are what this species needs. Sowing at the right time of year matters more than any treatment.
Because it can self-sow, keep it away from vegetable beds and irrigated fields.
Sow Chinese buttercup in the cool season for bright yellow flowers in damp corners.
No. Garden ranunculus, or Persian buttercup, is Ranunculus asiaticus, usually grown from claw-like tubers for large, rose-like flowers. Chinese buttercup, Ranunculus cantoniensis, is a wild-type perennial with small yellow flowers.
No. Weeks of cold at 4 °C did not help in research. Fresh seed germinated at over 80% with cool, alternating day and night temperatures.
Handle it with gloves. Buttercup sap can redden and blister skin, and the plant should never be eaten or fed to animals.
