About this variety
Yellow mullein (Verbascum phlomoides) is a tall biennial flowering plant with a basal rosette of soft grey-green leaves and upright spikes of yellow flowers. The accepted botanical identity is Verbascum phlomoides L., a temperate species native from Europe toward south-western Siberia and the Caucasus. This packet contains 100 seeds.
Also known as: Orange mullein, Clasping mullein, Windblumen-Königskerze and Molène faux-phlomis.
Surface sow the fine seeds on clean, free-draining seed compost and press them gently into place. Do not bury deeply. Keep the medium evenly moist and provide bright light. When seedlings are large enough to handle, move them into individual pots and later set them in their final position. Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil. Once established, the plant is suited to dry borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic plantings.
During the first season, plants usually concentrate on forming the leafy rosette. Flowering stems commonly rise in the following season, adding strong vertical structure to a border. The yellow blooms are useful in pollinator-focused gardens, and the textured foliage provides interest before flowering. Remove spent stems if you prefer to limit self-seeding, or leave them temporarily for a natural dry-garden appearance.
