Fruit and plant
- Vigorous, sprawling vine up to 2 m
- Mid-season, oblate fruit of 100–200 g
- Dark pink with deep purple shoulders
- Sweet, fruity taste for fresh eating, salads, sandwiches and cooking
Sow into soil at 16–29 °C
Tomato seed germinates well when the soil stays in its optimum range of 16–29 °C. At 20–30 °C seedlings typically appear in 6–8 days. Indoors, cover the seed with 3–6 mm of seed-starting mix. These figures are typical for the species, not a test of this packet.
Growing on
Sow indoors and plant out into fertile, well-drained soil at pH 6.0–6.8. Give plants wide spacing, 80–120 cm, for air circulation. Stake or cage the vine to carry the fruit load. It prefers warm, sunny conditions with steady moisture and no waterlogging.
When to expect fruit
Fruit ripens about 75–80 days after transplanting.
What you get
One packet of 10 seeds of Amethyst Jewel. Tomato seed typically stays usable for 4 years or more when kept cool, dark and dry, so seed you do not sow this season can wait for the next.
FAQ
Why is Amethyst Jewel spaced so widely?
The vine sprawls to about 2 m, and 80–120 cm between plants keeps air moving through the foliage.
When is the fruit ripe?
When the body has turned dark pink under the purple shoulders; the purple shows before the fruit is ripe.
