About this variety
About this species
Swietenia macrophylla is an accepted species in the Meliaceae family, native from Mexico through tropical South America. It is a wet-tropical tree with a Vulnerable conservation assessment. Mature trees are large, with pinnate leaves and woody capsules that open to release winged seeds.
Also known as: Honduran mahogany, Brazilian mahogany, Bigleaf mahogany, Caoba, Mogno, Acajou à grandes feuilles, Swietenia candollei and Swietenia belizensis.
Sowing guide
- Use fresh, intact winged seed and a deep container with a free-draining mix.
- Insert or lay the seed shallowly so it is only lightly covered.
- Water gently and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
- Maintain even moisture and good ventilation without waterlogging.
Winged tropical tree seeds can lose performance during prolonged or unsuitable storage. Sow promptly, handle the seed carefully and avoid burying it deeply. Do not disturb the developing root to check progress.
Seedling care
Increase light gradually after emergence and pot on before the root system becomes constrained. Keep young plants warm, evenly watered and protected from frost. Use a stable, well-drained container.
Big-leaf mahogany is a large long-term tree project. Confirm climate, space, conservation and local planting requirements before outdoor establishment. This seed listing does not certify future timber form or commercial yield.
Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.
