About this variety
About this species
Sesbania sesban is an accepted Fabaceae species native across tropical and southern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent. It grows as a shrub or tree of seasonally dry tropical habitats. It is often known as Egyptian riverhemp and can grow rapidly where warmth and moisture are available.
Also known as: Egyptian riverhemp, Egyptian sesban, Sesban, Jayanti, Jait, Sesbania aegyptiaca and Aeschynomene sesban.
Sowing guide
- Soak intact seed in room-temperature water; lightly abrade only seed that does not swell.
- Use individual pots or a deep tray filled with an open, free-draining medium.
- Cover the seed to about its own thickness and water gently.
- Keep warm and evenly moist under bright light with regular ventilation.
The hard coat can make emergence irregular. Scarification should be shallow and controlled, never a deep cut. A clean medium and drainage reduce losses during the quick, tender early stage.
Seedling care
Give seedlings strong light gradually and transplant before roots interlock. Water consistently during active growth, while avoiding stagnant saturation. Young plants are tender to frost and prolonged cold.
The species is often short-lived and fast growing. Check regional guidance before outdoor sowing, because it can naturalise in suitable climates. This listing makes no claim about fodder, soil improvement or other end uses; confirm those separately with qualified local guidance.
Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.
