About this variety
About this species
The price source uses Cassia tora, which current Kew taxonomy treats as a synonym of the accepted name Senna tora. This Fabaceae annual, perennial or subshrub is native across tropical and subtropical Asia and parts of the Pacific, mainly in seasonally dry tropical habitats. It is commonly called sickle senna.
Also known as: Foetid cassia, Chakwad, Panwar, Chakramarda, Tagarai, Thakara, Jue ming zi and Cassia tora.
Sowing guide
- Lightly abrade a small point of the hard coat without reaching the embryo.
- Soak treated seed in room-temperature water and record which seeds swell.
- Sow in a loose, free-draining medium and cover to about one seed thickness.
- Keep warm and evenly moist under bright light with regular ventilation.
Hard seed can emerge unevenly. Scarification only needs to make the coat permeable and should never become a deep cut. Keep the container labelled and avoid repeated disturbance while maintaining moisture without saturation.
Seedling care
Provide strong light gradually and thin or transplant seedlings before their roots interlock. Water consistently during active growth, letting excess water drain. Protect young plants from cold and contain developing pods if seed spread is undesirable.
Sickle senna can behave as an agricultural or environmental weed in suitable climates. Check local regulations before sowing, keep cultivation contained and prevent unwanted seed escape. Seeds and plant parts are supplied only for botanical cultivation; no food, beverage or medicinal safety claim is made.
Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.
