About this variety
About this species
This plant is also sold as Cassia auriculata, a name now placed under the accepted Senna auriculata. This Fabaceae shrub or small tree is native from the Indian subcontinent to Myanmar and grows mainly in seasonally dry tropical habitats. Common names include tanner's cassia and avaram.
Also known as: Tanner's cassia, Avaram, Avarampoo, Tarwar, Tangedu, Ranawara, Matara tea and Cassia auriculata.
Sowing guide
- Lightly abrade a small area of the hard coat without touching the embryo.
- Soak treated seed in room-temperature water before sowing.
- Plant in a warm, free-draining mix and cover to about one seed thickness.
- Keep evenly moist with good air movement, allowing excess water to escape.
Hard-coated seed may germinate at different times. Record the treatment and avoid repeatedly digging in the pot. Scarification should open the coat only; a deep cut can damage the embryo.
Seedling care
Move seedlings gradually into stronger light and use deep pots before roots become crowded. Water thoroughly, then let the upper layer begin drying. Protect young plants from cold and persistently wet soil.
Plan for a woody flowering shrub or small tree in a warm, sunny setting. Check local guidance before outdoor planting outside the native range. This listing is for cultivation and does not make medicinal or beverage-use claims.
Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.
