About this variety
Rain Tree (Samanea saman) is a large fast-growing tree with feathery leaves, pink powder-puff flowers, dark pods, and a broad umbrella-shaped canopy.
Also known as: Monkeypod, Saman, Samán, Guango, Cow tamarind, Vilayati siris, Chamchuri, Albizia saman, Pithecellobium saman and Enterolobium saman.
For cultivation, choose full sun in tropical or subtropical conditions and a spacious permanent location away from confined structures. Use a well-draining sandy or loamy mix kept consistently moist during early growth but not waterlogged. Freshly sown containers should have drainage and good air movement. Natural seed lots vary, so emergence speed and the number of seedlings depend on pretreatment, temperature, moisture, and the grower's conditions.
Seed starting: Scarify the hard seed coat or soak the seeds in hot, not boiling, water as it cools for 12–24 hours. Sow 1–2 cm deep and keep near 24–30°C. Label the container with the sowing date, keep it out of standing water, and check moisture regularly. Do not discard a sound pot simply because individual seeds emerge at different times.
After emergence, Provide strong light as soon as seedlings emerge and transplant before roots become crowded. Water regularly during establishment, then adjust care as the woody root system develops. The mature canopy can become very wide, so this species is intended for gardeners with appropriate outdoor space.
Seeds are intended for propagation. Before planting outdoors, confirm that the species and your growing method are suitable for your climate, available space, and local rules.
