About this variety
Grow amla, also called Indian gooseberry, from seeds of Phyllanthus emblica. This subtropical fruit tree develops a graceful crown and small green fruits with a notably tart flavor. It is a distinctive choice for collectors of useful fruit trees, warm-climate gardens, and large containers where its size can be managed with pruning.
Also known as: Indian gooseberry, Amalaki, Aonla, Nellikai, Usirikaya, Amloki, Emblic, Emblic myrobalan, Malacca tree and Emblica officinalis.
Amla prefers bright light, warmth, and freely draining soil. Soak the seeds in clean water for about 24 hours before sowing. Plant them shallowly in a moist, airy seed-starting mix and keep the tray warm without leaving it waterlogged. Germination can be uneven, so steady moisture and patience are important. Move young seedlings gradually into stronger sunlight after they establish several true leaves. Protect tender plants from cold and frost.
Each option is supplied as seeds for propagation, not as a live plant. Seed appearance and germination timing naturally vary from batch to batch and with growing conditions.
Phyllanthus emblica can become a substantial tree in suitable climates. Check local conditions before planting outdoors and allow enough room for long-term growth.
