BEFORE SOWING Keep the packet label with the seeds and note the botanical name, Leucaena Leucocephala. Research the needs of this species for your climate before sowing. Use clean containers with open drainage holes and a fresh, free-draining seed-starting mix. Clean tools and an evenly prepared medium help reduce avoidable problems during early growth.
GENERAL SOWING APPROACH Sow in a labelled container at a depth appropriate to the seed size. Water gently so the seed is not displaced. Keep the medium evenly moist but not saturated, and allow air movement around covered trays. Temperature, light and any dormancy treatment should be selected for the species. Check the container regularly instead of following a rigid watering schedule.
GROWING ON After emergence, increase light gradually and avoid sudden exposure to harsh conditions. Move seedlings into separate containers before roots become crowded. Water thoroughly, let excess water drain, and allow the surface to begin drying before the next watering. Protect young seedlings from temperature extremes while they establish.
PLEASE NOTE Seeds are living material, so germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Seed-grown plants are naturally variable. Keep sowing notes and check local planting or invasive-species guidance before moving plants outdoors.
