Growing from Seed

Sowing: Sow outdoors about 1 cm deep in prepared soil, or start in modules for later transplanting. Choose locally suitable mild or cool conditions and keep the seedbed evenly moist while seedlings establish.

Position: Use fertile, moisture-retentive soil in a sunny position. Light shade can help during the hottest weather. Containers are suitable when they provide drainage, regular moisture, and enough room for the plants.

Spacing: Thin or transplant plants approximately 15–30 cm apart, depending on whether you want smaller leaves or fuller heads. Maintain airflow and remove weeds that compete for water.

Watering: Water regularly so the soil stays evenly moist without becoming waterlogged. Prolonged heat or dryness can encourage bolting and reduce leaf quality.

Harvest and Uses: Pick clean outer leaves as required, or harvest the plant after it forms the size of head you prefer. Wash leaves before using them in salads, sandwiches, wraps, and fresh garnishes.

What You Receive: One labelled packet containing 100 Red Romaine Lettuce seeds. This product contains seeds only, not seedlings or harvested lettuce.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Romaine lettuce the same as cos lettuce?

Romaine and cos are names used for the upright lettuce group. Red Romaine refers here to a red-leaved type within that group.

Can Red Romaine be grown in containers?

Yes. Use a container with drainage, a moisture-retentive growing medium, good light, and regular watering. Allow enough spacing for the intended harvest size.

Why can the leaf colour vary?

Red colour expression can differ with genetics, plant age, light, temperature, and other growing conditions. The listing therefore does not guarantee one exact shade.
