Krascheninnikovia ceratoides Eurasian Winterfat Seeds

About this species

Krascheninnikovia ceratoides is an accepted species in the Amaranthaceae family. Kew records it as a perennial or subshrub native from southern Spain and eastern Central Europe across temperate Eurasia to China. Dense stellate hairs give the young stems and foliage a pale, softly textured appearance. The compact woody habit suits botanical collections and dry, steppe-inspired plantings where the climate is appropriate.

Also known as: Eurasian winterfat, Teresken, Hornmelde, Eurotia ceratoides and Axyris ceratoides.

Sowing guide

1. Fill a clean tray or small pots with a fine, free-draining propagation mix and level the surface.
2. Scatter the seed thinly, press it into contact and cover only lightly.
3. Water with a fine mist and keep the surface evenly moist without making it saturated.
4. Provide bright light, fresh air and moderate temperatures, keeping the container clearly labelled.

Small seed can be displaced by forceful watering or lost beneath a deep covering. Germination timing may vary, so maintain patient, regular care rather than repeatedly disturbing the surface.

Seedling care

When seedlings are established and large enough to handle, transplant them carefully into individual containers. Increase sun and airflow gradually. Good drainage is important, but young plants should not be allowed to dry suddenly while the root system is still small. Local climate should guide sowing time, irrigation and winter protection.

Natural differences in germination, vigour, mature size, foliage colour and habit are expected. Results depend on temperature, moisture, soil, light, storage and care. Check regional guidance before planting outside the native range. The licensed primary photograph depicts the exact species and was visually reviewed against its Wikimedia Commons record.
