About this variety
Warmth decides how fast the seed comes up
Pepper seed germinates slowly in cool soil. In Oregon State University extension data, seed sown 1.3 cm deep appeared in 8 days at 25–30 °C, about 12 days at 20 °C and about 25 days at 15 °C; 16 °C is given as the minimum. The University of Minnesota keeps seed flats on a heating mat at 27–32 °C until the seedlings emerge, then lets the soil settle at about 21 °C.
Timing and sowing
Start seed about eight weeks before the plants go outside. Sow 6 mm deep in a seed tray with fine, soilless mix. After the first true leaves appear, thin or move seedlings so they stand 5–8 cm apart. Harden them off over one to two weeks, moving them gradually into more sun.
Planting out
Plant outdoors only after night temperatures stay above 10 °C. Space plants 45 cm apart in rows 75–90 cm apart, with wind shelter. Dry soil, daytime heat above 32 °C and nights below 16 °C or above 21 °C can all weaken growth.
Saving what is left
Pepper seed keeps about two years when stored cool, dark and dry, so you can sow part of the 25 seeds and keep the rest.
What the packet is
Also known as: Tsitsak pepper, Armenian pepper, Chili pepper, Chilli, Mirch, Chile, Piment, Peperoncino and Acı biber.
The packet holds 25 seeds of Capsicum annuum sold as Tsitsak. The timings above are for pepper in general; we have no sourced figures for this variety's heat, pod size or days to ripe fruit and do not state any.
