• Plant Description: Arkel peas are compact, bushy plants growing up to 50–60 cm tall. They produce deep green pods, each approximately 8–10 cm long, containing 7–8 tender, wrinkled peas. Known for their early harvest and robust growth, these plants perform well in cool climates.
• Flavor Profile: Arkel peas are renowned for their sweetness and soft texture, making them perfect for steaming, boiling, or enjoying raw.
• Climate Adaptability: Thrives in cool-season climates and is frost-tolerant, allowing for cultivation in temperate and subtropical regions.

Uses and Benefits:

• Culinary Applications:
• Enjoy fresh from the garden as a sweet and tender snack.
• Perfect for steaming, boiling, or adding to soups, salads, and stir-fries.
• Excellent for freezing or dehydrating, retaining flavor and nutritional value.
• Nutritional Value: High in protein, fiber, vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as essential minerals like potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Arkel peas support digestion, energy levels, and overall health.
• High Yield: Reliable and prolific producer, providing an abundant harvest for fresh use or storage.
• Soil Improvement: As a nitrogen-fixing legume, Arkel peas enrich soil fertility, making them an excellent rotational crop.

Cultivation:

• Soil Preparation:
• Choose well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5.
• Enrich the soil with well-rotted compost or manure before planting to promote strong growth.
• Loosen the soil to ensure proper aeration and root development.
• Sowing:
• Plant seeds at a depth of 2–3 cm and space them 10–15 cm apart in rows 30–45 cm apart.
• Ensure the soil temperature is cool but not frosty, ideally between 10–20°C, for optimal germination.
• In cooler climates, sow in early spring; in warmer regions, sow in autumn for best results.
• Germination: Seeds germinate within 7–10 days under ideal conditions.
• Growth Conditions:
• Requires full sun to partial shade for healthy growth.
• Provide moderate watering to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and pod formation. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.
• Mulching around the base of the plants helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
• Support: Although dwarf in nature, plants may benefit from low trellises or sticks for additional support during pod development.
• Fertilization: Side-dress with an organic fertilizer or compost tea during the flowering stage to encourage pod formation and high yields.
• Pest and Disease Management:
• Watch for common pests like aphids and caterpillars; use organic pest control methods if necessary.
• Ensure proper spacing and airflow to prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew.
• Harvesting:
• Pods are ready for harvest 50–60 days after sowing when they are plump and tender.
• Frequent picking encourages continuous production and prevents pods from becoming overripe.

Unique Features:

• Early Harvest: Arkel is a quick-growing variety, making it perfect for regions with short growing seasons.
• Sweet and Tender: Praised for its exceptional flavor and texture, ideal for gourmet and everyday cooking.
• Frost Tolerance: Performs well in cooler climates, withstanding mild frost conditions.

Growing Tips:

• Plant in succession every 2–3 weeks for a continuous harvest throughout the growing season.
• Rotate with non-legume crops to maintain soil health and reduce pest issues.
• For best results, avoid planting peas in the same spot consecutively to prevent soil-borne diseases.
