About this variety
About the pink shower tree
Cassia nodosa is the familiar horticultural and seed-trade name. It is currently treated as a synonym of the accepted Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa. The tree is grown for its spreading crown and abundant pink flower clusters.
Also known as: Pink cassia, Apple blossom tree, Pink and white shower, Java cassia and Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa.
Sowing guide
- Use a clean, free-draining seed mix and a container with open drainage holes.
- Lightly abrade one small part of the hard seed coat without cutting the embryo, then soak the seed in room-temperature water.
- Sow about one seed-width deep, water gently and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
- Keep the mix evenly moist but never saturated, and ventilate covered trays.
Hard-coated seeds can start at different times. Leave sound seeds undisturbed and avoid overwatering while waiting.
Growing on
Once seedlings are established, increase light gradually and pot them separately before roots become crowded. Protect young plants from cold and drying wind. Water thoroughly, allow excess water to drain, and let the surface begin to dry before watering again.
Seed-grown trees are naturally variable and may not reproduce every feature of a selected parent. Check local climate, mature size and planting restrictions before moving a tree outdoors.
Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, temperature, moisture and local growing conditions. Record the sowing date and treatment so later batches can be adjusted.
