Bottle gourd is a vigorous, heat-loving climber whose hard seeds germinate faster after an overnight soak. Grown on a trellis or pandal and pollinated at dusk, long and round types give tender fruit within about two months.
Soil at least 15°C (59°F); best 25-30°C (77-86°F).
1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 in); deeper sowing delays germination.
About 4-5 days in warm, moist soil; longer if cool.
Full sun.
Soak overnight (12-24 hours); nick the seed edge if seed is old or very hard.
Direct sow preferred; seedlings can be raised in pots for 3-4 weeks.
Bottle gourd seeds have a thick, hard seed coat that takes up water slowly. Sort out broken or very light seed before soaking.
Optional. If seed is old or does not swell after soaking, carefully nick or file a small notch on the seed edge, away from the pointed end where the root emerges. Do not cut into the white kernel.
Not needed. Bottle gourd is a tropical, frost-tender crop with no cold requirement.
Recommended. Soak seed overnight, or 12 to 24 hours, in water at room temperature or slightly warm. Sow immediately after soaking into moist soil; do not let swollen seed dry out.
Sow when soil is at least 15°C (59°F); 25-30°C (77-86°F) is ideal. The crop grows best with days around 30-35°C (86-95°F) and nights of 18-22°C (64-72°F) and cannot tolerate frost.
Sow 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 in) deep, 4-5 seeds per pit, and thin to the 2-3 strongest seedlings about two weeks after sowing.
Well-drained loam rich in organic matter. Indian practice is to dig pits about 60 cm wide and 30-45 cm deep (24 x 12-18 in) and fill them with topsoil mixed with well-rotted farmyard manure.
Water the pits a few days before sowing so the soil is moist, then water lightly every day until seedlings are up. Avoid waterlogging, which rots soaked seed.
Light is not needed for germination; give seedlings full sun from emergence.
Soaked seed usually emerges in about 4-5 days in warm soil. Unsoaked or cool-sown seed can take noticeably longer and emerge unevenly.
Direct sowing is simplest because the vine dislikes root disturbance. If you raise seedlings, sow in individual biodegradable pots 3-4 weeks before planting out and transplant without breaking the root ball.
Put up a trellis or pandal about 1.5 m (5 ft) high when the vines start to run. Space pits about 1-1.5 m apart in rows 2-3 m apart, or 3 x 3 m under a pandal. Fruit hanging from a trellis stays straight and clean and is less likely to rot in the rainy season.
Vines grow very fast in heat. Flowers are white and open at dusk, closing by the next morning. Tender fruit is usually ready about 55-75 days after sowing; across sources and cultivars the range is roughly 40-90 days to first harvest.
Cause: bottle gourd flowers open at night and are pollinated by moths and other night insects, which may be scarce in gardens and on balconies. Fix: hand-pollinate in the evening or very early morning. Pick a male flower (thin stalk, no swelling) and rub its pollen onto the stigma of a female flower, which has a small hairy fruit behind the petals.
Cause: hard seed coat, sowing too deep, or cold soil. Fix: soak overnight, nick old seed, sow no deeper than 2 cm and wait for warm soil.
Cause: fruit fly laying eggs in young fruit. Fix: collect and bury damaged fruit, cover young fruits with paper or cloth bags, and use fruit fly traps.
Cause: powdery mildew (white powder) or downy mildew (yellow patches with grey growth underneath), both common in humid or rainy weather. Fix: remove affected leaves, keep the canopy open on the trellis and water at the base.
Cause: mosaic virus spread by whiteflies. Fix: uproot infected plants early and control whiteflies.
Sow the summer crop in January-February and the rainy-season crop in June-July; in hill areas sow in April. In Kerala, sowing is also done in September-December.
Pick fruit while the rind is still tender and green. Overmature fruit becomes hard and unmarketable and slows further fruiting. Cut with a knife, leaving a short stalk.
Long types such as Ramdev are best grown on a high trellis so fruit hangs straight. Round Lattu types can also be grown on a lower frame or trailed over dry twigs on the ground.
Mix well-rotted manure into each pit before sowing and give a nitrogen top-dressing in two splits two weeks apart once vines are growing.
Grow long Ramdev or round Lattu bottle gourd from Deodar Seeds for a fast, heavy-cropping summer and monsoon vegetable.
It is not strictly necessary, but an overnight soak of 12-24 hours speeds up and evens out germination because the seed coat is hard. Sow straight after soaking.
The first flowers are mostly male, and the white flowers open only at night, so daytime bees do not pollinate them. Hand-pollinate at dusk or early morning by transferring pollen from a male flower to a female flower.
Tender fruit is usually ready 55-75 days after sowing, depending on variety and temperature, and plants keep cropping if you pick regularly.
Yes, round types especially, in a large, deep container with a strong trellis, full sun, regular watering and feeding. Expect fewer fruits than from a vine in open ground, and hand-pollinate if night insects are scarce.
